Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary is by far the biggest wildlife sanctuary in Goa. Located near the town of Mollem, the sanctuary covers an area of 240 sq km. Within the sanctuary, you will also find the Mollem National Park. To the north of the state along the forest clad slopes of the Western Ghats, you will find a verdant land just perfect for thriving wildlife. The sanctuary is situated on the eastern border of Goa. The place is 53 km away from Panaji and 54 km away from Margao.
Among the animals that have made the place their home, you will find Gaur, Sambhar, Leopard, Spotted Deer, Jungle cat, Giant Squirrels, Pythons and Cobras. The sanctuary is worthy of a visit and you may go deep into the forest renting a jeep. There are some places that are more convenient in viewing wild animals. Tourists make it a point to go to Devil's Canion View Point. This is the best place for ornithologist to see some rare and colorful feathers.
The place also has a few historically important temples near its vicinity. The famous temples of the Kadambas and Tambdisurla is within 13 km from Devil's Canion View Point. Tourists to Mahaveer Sanctuary can be assured of the fact that accommodation is not a constraint here. There are comfortable cottages and dormitories built and managed by the tourism department of the state. If you are at the Mahaveer Sanctuary do not skip the beautiful 13th century Mahadeva Temple. |
