Only a few kilometer away from the Vasco - da - Gama sea port, you will find the only one of its kind Indian Naval Aviation Museum. Established in the year 1998, this museum is also the only one of its kind in Asia. Naval Aviation Museum is situated atop a plateau over looking the vast Arabian Sea. At the far distance you will see the beautiful Bogamalo Beach stretching along the sea. The museum is divided into two section: the out door open air section and the indoor section.
There is a huge "Super Constellation" that stands near the gate. This plane was first used for transportation of passengers by Indian Airlines. Later on this plane was used by the Indian Air Force as a transport craft. After that the plane was borrowed by the Indian Navy and although it is now de-commissioned, the aircraft is still one of the major attractions of the place.
In the outdoor section there are a number of other aircrafts on display. You will see the engines of Sea Hawk, Helicopter, Sealand Aircraft, etc displayed for the tourists. Move further up and you will find some sleek and effective aircrafts on display. There are Sea Harrier, Dove, Sea Land, Seahawk, Vampire and a few other planes operational in the Indian Navy that are stationed as exhibits.
The indoor section looks beautiful and the ambience is created in such a way that you will have the feeling that you are entering the aircraft carrier INS Viraat. The other rooms too are planned in such a way that you will have the feeling that you are aboard the mighty warship. You can also see different assault weapons like torpedoes, bombs, rockets, missiles and missile war heads, depth chargers, etc. You can also visit the "Sonobuoy Room". This extremely important room has a number of sensors to detect underwater enemy.
There is a Museum Souvenir Shop and tourists must stop by and buy some of the most fascinatingly beautiful souvenirs on display. These souvenirs are very special and you will be cherishing your visit to the museum for years to come. |
