Built by the Portuguese in the year 1617, this wonderful bastion on red laterite is located only 10 km away from Mapusa. The purpose of Chapora Fort was to be a forward outpost for the defense of the Portuguese occupied territory in Goa. The fort was raided time and again by the rulers of the neighboring kingdoms and it was in the year 1892 that the Portuguese finally deserted the fort. Nothing but the ruins of the fort remains today. But the fort still has that uncanny romanticism associated with it. You will be able to see the two secret tunnels that was once the lifeline for those troops who laid besieged inside the fort. Another reason why you should go there is the splendid scenery that you will see from atop the fort.
This part of the country was surrendered to the Portuguese by the local rulers. The threat to the territory, however, remained as the Maratha under the inspiring leadership of Shivaji staged a spirited fightback. The Portuguese recovered lost territories again and equipped the fort to meet emergencies. Long tunnels were dug to ensure safe passage for the retreating forces and lifeline of supplies for the troops trapped inside the fort.
The place is a wonderful tourist attraction not because of the architectural excellence because nothing much of the excellence remains. The place is popular because of the wonderful scenic beauty. Climb to the top of the fort and you will find the vast expanse of Vagator Beach and Anjuna Beach ahead. The cool salty breeze of the see, the picturesque beauty of the landscape and the association of the fort with Portuguese - Maratha conflict give it an aura of romance that you will fine nowhere else. |
