The laterite blocks and lime plastered structure adjacent to the Se Cathedral is famous as Church of St. Francis of Assisi. The church faces the west and has three chapels on either side. The exterior of the church is designed in keeping with the Tuscan style while the main entrance is built in the Manuline style. There are no aisles in this church. The wall that separates the chapels and supports the gallery has fresco painting displaying intricate floral designs.
On the facade you will find the statue of our lady of miracle and this statue was brought from Jaffna in Sri Lanka. On the pedestal bearing the insignia of Franciscans, stands the wooden statue of St. Francis of Assisi. The church started from a very humble beginning but it quite quickly flourished. The church follows the three principles of the saint: poverty, humility and obedience. |
