Church of St. Anne has arguably the most ostentatious design that stands testament to the excellence of Jesuit architecture in Goa. Reconstructed by Mons Francisco do Rego with his own fund and with small contribution by the villagers, this church was later completed by Antonio Francisco da Cunha and the main alter was consecrated to St. Anne.
On the 26th day of July, the festivity of St. Anne is celebrated throughout Goa but you must visit the tiny village of Talaulim to see the Cucumber Feast. Although the Christian festivals celebrated in Portugal are also celebrated in Goa, there is a regional influence that has modified all the festivals and has imparted some unique local flavor to the celebration.
The popular participation during the festivity is amazing and there is a popular perception that the prayers are granted in most cases. The most important thing about the church of St. Anne is that it follows an architectural style that is and amalgamation of Indian and western. European fixedness and native flavor have made Church of St Anne unique. A master-piece of Indian and Baroque style, the church is a wonderfully poignant place where you will love to spend a day. |
